3 of the most common questions photographers get about engagements

Over my time running Author Made, I’ve had the privilege of shooting a lot of engagement sessions. I’ve run into a few questions that I would love to answer through this blog post! Below are three of the most common questions I get for shoots:

How do I pick a location for my engagement shoot?

Ah, the age old question! As much as I would love to give you a list of places that you can pick from, this is really depending on your preference! So much of what we, as photographers, are trained to do is to be able to shoot in any kind of location and condition. Keeping this in mind, this is what I tell my clients whenever they ask me this question:

  • Where did you meet on your first date?

  • Is there a location that is meaningful to the two of you?

  • Do you have a specific aesthetic of a location that you like?

If after all of that, you’re not entirely sure of have a place that you want to shoot at - I can always make suggestions from there. As a storytelling photographer, I want your sessions to be filled with meaning when you look at the picture.

What should I wear for my engagement photos?

Ah, another great question! Again, back up to the top, this is another “it depends” answer, with a twist!

Your outfit should really be based upon where you end up going to shoot your engagement shoot. For example, wearing green when shooting in a park is generally a terrible idea because you’ll start to blend into the trees and bushes! But with that, those are more so tips that I myself know through experience.

So what does that mean for you? When you decide upon a location, I will recommend colors that you should or should not wear. This will help allow you to focus on the day/experience of getting an engagement shoot done rather than worrying about all the potential possibilities of what outfits to wear.

As for what to wear? Be yourself! Storytelling photographers such as myself want to see fully expressive clients because this translates so well in their engagement session! So just come as you are.

But #GroomTip - guys - don’t wear hats unless this is like an intentional coordinated style choice (ie. boho, hipster, etc.) We want to see your lovely faces as well and we want to make sure that we get the best representation of you that we can!

What happens if it rains during my engagement shoot?

Weather is insane, especially here in Central Florida. But almost always we try and shoot on the same day. If you’re into it, we can even shoot in the rain! If you’re not into that, we can certain wait it out. One of the most beautiful things is getting to shoot after a rainstorm, there’s just a very warm glow that happens which just casts very warm tones on everything!

This picture was taken immediately after a huge storm passed by. As you can see, the entire tone of the image is just really nice and warm and just has beautiful lighting.

But if it takes too long, we can always reschedule a shoot. I want to make sure that we get something that works for you and your loved one!
